Well, it's Monday and I am off. *happy dance* My company's owners are Jewish and they observe Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement. Okay, so I'm not really dancing, because that would be disrespectful. But I am happy and I do wish them a peaceful holiday.

So, Saturday was my long run. I was slated to go 7.5, but instead went 8 miles. 8 MILES. I can hardly believe it. I won't lie. it was a tough run, but I learned later that everyone was having a difficult time of it. The humidity came back and the air was just so thick.

I am happy to report that I still maintained ~13.5 pace, so that was good. The next morning though I was pretty worthless. I can't believe that extra half mile did me in!

Cassie did her first Race on Saturday too... a Kid K and did fantastic!

That's really all I have. I need to catch a quick nap before I take Cass for her 5 year well visit. She's at least getting 1 shot -- so I know we'll end up at Toys R Us! LOL

Happy 5th Birthday to my Baby Girl

Happy birthday to my Daughter, Cassandra Rose, who turns 5 today. I can hardly believe how fast time flies. I remember being so worried, wondering how I'd learn to be maternal... be a good Mom. I thought it was going to feel so unatural, yet today I can't imagine my life without her. I watch this video and still get teary eyed. :)

Thursday Thirteen - Career Path Considerations

I enjoy technology, but after 20+ years I'm so burnt out. This case of burnout has lasted for a number of years now, and I always say that after my last layoff, if I didn't find this job and work for such a great place, I would not be doing it. Still, I'm not happy in IT. I'm not getting any younger; I need to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. So here's 13 things to consider with regard to a total change in career path.

1) In my 20's I wanted to be an EMT. Seriously.

2) I need to do something where I can help others make a difference in their lives (as trite as that may sound). By making a difference in someone else's life, it will make a difference in mine.

3) I enjoy learning about nutrition and wellness, even though my own biochemistry and metabolism baffle me!

4) I've considered physical therapy, physical therapy assistant or personal trainer.

5) I've considered nutrition - as a dietician

6) I've recently thought about chiropratice well…

No Speedplay

So last night's speedwork never happened. I apparently went to the wrong location. When I got there it was all the aweseome superfast folks. Kudos for me going, because it was raining. But I don't know why I couldn't get out of the car and run with them.

Well, I mean I know why... but why couldn't I get past it? I just felt so self-conscious. If my B2 group was there, I woud have had no problem and would have enjoyed the extra oxygen the rain brings with it.

I'm sitting there, looking around and no teammates. I waited 40 minutes, then decided I'd use the time to go watch my Daughter in her gymnastics class, which I normally miss, because I'm running. On the way there my friend called,

Hombre: "Where are you?"
Me: "I just left the high school."
Hombre: "Which school?"
Me: "Clear Lake."
Hombre: "B is over here at Clear Creek with 2 others."

Me: "Doh!"

That explains why only the superfast were there. LOL Every…

Food Find: Goodheart's Beef Merlot

Typically I'm not one for frozen foods, however they do have their place in the land of convenience. I just try an opt for the least processed options. In the land of frozen foods, good choices, not tainted with a gazillion additives and preservatives, are few and far between.

Shopping at Walmart last week I found 2 items, both by Goodheart's Brand. I can't find a website for these specific products, but there is a general site and it looks like they might supply food for restaurants. Interesting.

I bought the chicken broccoli and the beef merlot versions. Hubs ate the chicken broccoli and I tried the beef merlot today.

It's super easy, because it's steam-in-bag. In less time than it takes for me to run a 1/2 mile it's done. 6 minutes total from freezer to pie-hole. :)

As for taste, the first word that came to mind was "fresh." The broccoli, cauliflower and carrots all tasted fresh. The beef? Well, it was frozen beef, but the pieces weren't so to…

As for pre- and post-race tips, I thought it best to review how you should/will feel, and what you should do when you finish.

Running or walking a half or full marathon distance is not a walk around the block. Even with the best of training, you will not feel “normal” at the finish. Of course you will have done the salt, drunk for thirst, taken a baby aspirin, and run/walked within your limits so nothing physiologically is “wrong.” You will feel tired -- exhausted, even -- and your muscles and feet will ache from the repetitive exercise you have performed over hours on race day. Expect this. Think of it as “getting your money’s worth”!

Another Personal Best!

Today was my long run. 7 miles.

Never in my life have I ran 7 miles and if you asked me a few months ago if I thought I could, I would have said "yes" in an effort to make myself believe something that I couldn't quite completely fathom.

This morning's run was good. I felt good. I was worried that after Thursday's run, when my legs felt super heavy, that I was doomed for today. Plus I didn't know for sure if I was fully recovered from that severe sinus infection. I'm still coughing up goo. :(

One of my friends said 7 miles was a significant mile marker. She said she knew when she reached 7 miles, that she finally started to believe she'd make it through the half. I think there's some truth in that.

I ate well last night, protein, carbs and veggies. Didn't overdo it.

"When I turned 49 in May 2008, I decided I wanted to go from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one. When I started this blog, I wasn’t going on another diet. Plans change and I found myself back at Weight Watchers in July because I was getting nowhere on my own. It was the best thing I could have ever done for myself.

As of today, Sept 14, 2009, I’m down 61.2 pounds, I’m running, swimming and biking, I completed a duathlon in April, my first mini triathlon on August 1 and the Trek Women Sprint Triathlon (400-meter swim, 9-mile bike, 3.1-mile run) on Sept. 13, where I took 3rd place in the Athena category!

Now that triathlon season is over until Spring, I’ll be checking out Pilates, Zumba and working on strength training along with my triathlon training. I’ll be looking for some runs this fall and I can’t wait until next year’s Tri season.

In other news some of my tri club friends are headed out to OKC for the Redman Triathlon. I think most of them are doing the half ironman/70.3 distance; the distance I hope to do one day -- maybe even next year, depending on how my Oly distance training goes and pans out. :) Oh, yeah, that and if completing the half-marathon doesn't kill me and just makes me stronger. LOL

1) Hubs - His unconditional love and patience go unmatched to anyone I've ever known. SHMILY!

2) Mom - Her strength (though too strong for her own good sometimes) and her creativity. I'm glad to know the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

What's up?

First. Not me.

I have been fighting sinus infection/sinusitis for several days now and it really has a hold on me. I just feel like the walking dead. My help desk tech is on drill service this week so she is out; there is no way I cannot be in the office. So here I am. "Here" is about all I am though. I knew if I stayed home, something would happen at work that would warrant me having to come in for something. But, since I'm here, nothing is breaking. That's Murphy's Law.

I went to the doc and got some scrips and I am hoping by tomorrow that I'll start to feel the cumulative effects of the meds. To make matters worse, I think I am also suffering a little rebound congestion from using nose spray -- right before everything came to ahead I noticed that I was stuffing up more quickly, and it was still to soon for another squirt. I think I'm getting past that now... I can actually breathe through one side. I mentioned how much I used the nosespray to the doc…

Like the Wind

As a girl in the 80's I loved Patrick Swayze, as much as the next teen. As a girl in the 80's who grew up in a dance studio, Patrick Swayze was first introduced to me because of his dancing, and not necessarily his "hunk-dom" :)

He had quite a life; growing up right here in Houston, playing sports, football track and then training in classical ballet? Doing that here in Houston is probably more challenging than in NYC. An accomplished dancer to movie hunk. :)

I can't even count how many times, that as a teen, I watched Dirty Dancing (maybe more than 16 Candles) and wished I could have been "Baby" for just a few seconds. Which few seconds? Makes no matter! :)

I'm sad that he's lost the tough fight with Pancreatic Cancer; what a strong fight it was.

There's that C-word again. I just hate it. Another reason to join the cause and help the fight to LiveSTRONG.

First DNS

I'm a big loser. I had my first DNS this morning. At least it wasn't a race I had to pay for.

Everything went from not feeling great to feeling worse. Aches, congestion, cough, chills... Ugh!

I was supposed to race in my running group's 10K this morning... I hoped for lightening; none appeared. They still ran in the rain. I'd be finished about 15 minutes ago.

Now I just feel like a slug. Even the tappng of the keyboard and chewing of my toast bothers my head.

13 things that will remind me that I am, indeed, a triathlete:

1) When I am asked my age, and I automatically blurt out my "race age", even if it does make me year older than I technically am (race age = your age by the 12/31 of the current year)

2) My training time is limited more by my availability and not by how far I can swim/bike or run.

3) Like Mom's who carry Goldfish and Cheerios in their bag, I carry Cliff Bars, Shot Blocks and maybe a single-serve of CytoMax.

4) I have a seemingly endless supply of water bottles, safety pins and tee-shirts.

5) When a co-worker asks me what I am doing this weekend, I reply, "I'm running a 10K" but don't feel like that's REALLY a race.

6) I will probably spend more time seeking out the correct technical gear than I will when I purchase a new car.

Review: Halo Headband

First, I'd like to share a small victory: You know that Kemah Bridge I somewat dread riding my bike over? Well, last night was my first run over it! And what's more, is that it really wasn't bad. I mean, it was work, but in a strange way it was pretty fun; especially the downside. I managed to keep my average pace, but only because It seemed so much easier to go faster on the downside. It was nice to feel what it was like to run a 10:30 pace for more than a minute. LOL I did 2.88 miles in 39 minutes, for a 13:49 pace with 2 times over the bridge. I had to stop to do a fast walk on the way up both times, for about a minute, but that just gives me something specific to improve upon. Needless to say there was lots of sweat going on, which brings me to this...

Can't think of a title today...

Saturday morning was my longest run ever. I have never, in my entire life, run more than 5 miles. My long run was 6 miles! I'm half-way to my half-marathon! My first distance PR :)

I returned to my original 4/1 intervals (I had slid back to 3/2 at the beginning of my training) and pretty much held them up the entire run. There were 2 cycles, somewhere around mile 4 that I walked 2 minutes and ran 4, but outside of that I was just steady with the 4/1. Although it was still work, I felt pretty good. My 6 mile pace was 13:45.

There is always one other woman just a clip ahead of me at our practice runs. I have to admit that I got a little happy when I found myself passing her in the last 1.5 miles. She's always just a smidgen ahead... maybe she was just having a bad day, but regardless I was having a good day.

Last Night's Run

Last night's run was supposed to be tempo intervals for 35 minutes. I was actually looking forward to it, even though I was totally fatigued in the afternoon. The weather has been less humid and it is much easier to see your progress. I like progress. :)

After a cat-nap while the Barbie Pegasus movie was on, I left when Daddy got home. The warm-up was fine. I started running and at about the 1/2 mile mark I started getting that rushing in my chest. I hate calling it palpatations, but that's what they are. To me they feel like that anxiety feeling you get when you have a near-miss to what could have been a fatal accident.

Anway, this has happened many times before (once on an open water swim when I was out 300+ yards). I just try to relax and it generally passes. When I'm in the water I just float on my back until it's over. Last night's episode lasted 12 minutes -- the longest episode ever. I stopped for a couple minutes and tried to just walk at a fast pa…

Talk to the Doc: Thyroid Stuff

Okay, so yesterday was another follow-up with my Endo. We're still trying to get my Thyroid stuff regulated. I can't even begin to tell you how frustrating it is.

I know. I read all the books that tell you it's a long drawn-out process, getting the meds right. But seriously... you can only let the fact that you're eating 1200 - 1400 calories a day, trained for 8 triathlons and are currently training for a half marathon and am staying exactly the same weight.

Yeah, it's true. The doctor pointed that out yesterday. Not like I didn't know this already.

So, what we do know is:
.125 of Levoxyl is too much. Makes me "hypERthyroid", but I lose weight! LOL
.100 of Levoxyl is still too much
.88 of Levoxyl is not enough. Palpatations and fatigue reccur routinely.

Alternating days of .100 and .88 doesn't releive the general bloat, fatique or bring back my sex drive (sorry, keepin' it real), though the palpatations are far less (that is until last ni…

Friday Fill-ins #140 we go!

1. I feel more positive about having more options managing my thyroid. I was beginning to feel a little hopeless that it was never going to regulated.

2. Sharing time with family and friends is always fun.

3. Right now, I can hear these things: A huge sigh coming from the office next to me, someone hitting the jar of choclates and flip-flops, flipping across the office floor.

4. It's Labor Day weekend and I'm glad to have a 3 day weekend.

Thursday Thirteen in a "Happy" Workplace

13 things to make the workplace, a happier place, according to me, and not some scientific or ivy league school study:

1) If it will improve the overall quality of someone's day, take care on how requests are made. Research shows that women prefer requests in the form of "Could you please..." and men prefer them in the form of "Would you please..."

2) If you ef-up, just own it. Next, learn from it. Not admitting your shortcomings doesn't make you appear like a super-hero... people only perceive you negatively thereafter. Everyone screws up, it's what you do next that counts.

3) Character is what you do when no one is watching. Don't take other people's food from the fridge. I'll share anything I have with anyone. Just let me know if it's the last of something.

4) Tight lipped smiles are not always an indication that someone is not friendly -- sometimes they're just shy and don't speak unless spoken to first.
